A porch changes how a house is used from the street. It has to be framed properly onto the existing structure, and the railing has to be right.
The porch is framed full width across the front elevation with a roof carried on posts, then decked, railed and skirted. Railing is the part that has to be correct, so it is built to code and fixed into the structure rather than to the surface boards. If an existing railing has movement in it, that usually points at the fasteners or the joists underneath, and both are worth inspecting before anything is quoted.
Stairs and access
Deck stair railings are their own detail, and they are what most people actually put their hand on. These are set to a comfortable rise and run with a continuous rail down the flight.
Matching the house
Aluminum, wood and vinyl railings are all available, and the choice is usually about matching what is already on the house rather than starting fresh.
Finishing
New pressure treated work needs to weather before it takes stain. Late spring through early fall is the right window in Ohio, when the wood is dry and temperatures suit absorption and curing.
